Africa is huge, and that is both a blessing and a curse for travellers, at least travellers who are unprepared.<\/p>\n

On the one hand, its size allows you to see and do more,<\/a> as long as you give yourself enough time. But on the other hand, its size can leave you feeling as though you are seeing the continent in a hurry.<\/p>\n

Over a 12-day tour, you could find yourself spending half the day travelling, only to spend a single day, or even a handful of hours in one place.<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t do much for your wanderlust and, in all honesty, the pace can leave you drained and irritable.<\/p>\n

What is a Slow Safari?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Safaris are meant to be slow and relaxed.<\/p>\n

The \u201cfirst safari\u201d is widely believed to have been undertaken by Fran\u00e7ois Levaillant, a French naturalist and ornithologist, who took his time on expeditions around the Cape of Good Hope. Unlike his peers, he sought to find animals and plants alive and in their natural habitats.<\/p>\n

Considering most means of transport way back then meant donkey cart or horseback, there was no way that a safari could be fast.<\/p>\n

He took his time making his observations, and that allowed him to eventually write books on his experiences and what he came across.<\/p>\n

Safaris have come a long way<\/a> since then, and they have only become busier and busier, as travel agencies and tourists sought to add as much as they could into a single trip.<\/p>\n

While Africa might be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, you can still see and do a lot without rushing through it at breakneck speed.<\/p>\n

A slow safari goes by several names, though the idea stays the same.<\/p>\n

Some operators call it a long-stay safari. Others say wellness safari<\/a>, immersive safari or slow travel safari, and a handful simply call it a considered or tailored itinerary.<\/p>\n

Most of them will describe the same thing, though: fewer camps or just one lodge, more nights in each, and days spent enjoying the wildlife and scenery rather than sitting for hours in a car as you transfer to the 3rd destination in 3 days.<\/p>\n

And slow safaris are not slow in the sense of having less to do.<\/p>\n

Slow safaris have become one of the biggest travel trends for 2026, with their popularity set to continue into 2027.<\/p>\n

The African Tourism Travel Association’s 2026 Africa travel trends report points to a considerable increase in longer safaris in fewer locations, with private conservancies, like Sabi Sands<\/a>, increasingly chosen over high-traffic parks, like der Kr\u00fcger<\/a>, for instance.<\/p>\n

American safari bookings for slow safaris have risen by 22 per cent in a single year.<\/p>\n

For some African nations, slow safaris have just always been the modus.<\/p>\n

In places like Tansania<\/a>, the destinations are often so far apart that it makes sense to choose a luxury lodge and then just travel in the area around it.<\/p>\n

In other nations, like South Africa, the slow safari is only now being adopted with a good dose of zest, as travellers have become more desirous of a slower trip.<\/p>\n

Namibia is a destination for every type of traveller; you can go on a slow safari in Etosha National Park and pair it with a trip to NamibRand Nature Reserve, where you\u2019ll be treated to some of the world\u2019s best stargazing<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The ideal amount of time to spend in one place in Namibia is 3 to 4 days, while much like Botswana, staying a whole month will give you the ultimate slow safari experience.<\/p>\n
