Tanzania Map

Tanzania is so much more than its icons and its islands.

Tanzania is a land of giants. It is home to Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa; the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera; and the Serengeti, perhaps the most famous national park on earth. This is a country where nature operates on a scale that is almost difficult to comprehend. From the endless plains that host the Great Migration to the baobab-studded landscapes of Tarangire, Tanzania offers a sense of space and freedom that is truly liberating.

What makes Tanzania so special is the variety of experiences it offers within its borders. You can spend a week trekking through diverse ecological zones to reach the “Roof of Africa,” then fly to the “Spice Island” of Zanzibar to lose yourself in the history of Stone Town or relax on palm-fringed beaches. For those seeking a more off-the-beaten-path adventure, the wild southern circuit offers remote parks like Nyerere and Ruaha, where you can explore vast wilderness areas largely untouched by mass tourism. Tanzania is also a mosaic of over 120 ethnic groups, including the iconic Maasai and the Hadzabe hunter-gatherers, offering rich opportunities for authentic cultural exchange. It is a destination that rewards the curious traveler with a blend of epic adventure, profound natural beauty, and a warm, rhythmic Swahili culture that beats at the heart of every journey.

When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

Tanzania is vast, so the best time to visit depends on which “circuit” you are exploring.

For the Northern Circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro)die Dry Season (June to October) is ideal for general wildlife viewing. To see the Great Migration calving, visit between January and February. To see the dramatic river crossings, June and July are best in the Western Serengeti, moving to the North by August.

For the Southern and Western Parks (Ruaha, Katavi)die Dry Season (June to October) is essential, as many areas become inaccessible during the rains.

Für Zanzibar and the Coast, the best weather is during the cool, dry months of June to October or the hot, dry months of January and February. The main rainy season (March to May) can see many resorts closing for maintenance.
