Why Choose Botswana?

A country that is so large and yet for its size quite sparsely populated, Botswana has time and again been hailed as the one place in Africa that every traveller wanting to experience an epic safari adventure should add to their bucket list.

From the stunning greenery that seems to envelope every part of the country, to the urban areas which have seemingly integrated into the surrounding wilderness, Botswana has a lot to explore and a lot to fall in love with. And along with its plenty of things to see and do, Botswana also has some pretty incredible accommodation, which ranges from the luxury kind, which is often more secluded and with more amenities, to the kind of accommodation which is more rustic, and might even have you sleeping rough, but comfortable, beneath the stars.

What makes Botswana so very different to the rest of the safari destinations on the continent is that the wildlife is given a lot more freedom to move around. Camps are often not even fenced off, forcing guests to camp out on the roof of their vehicle, making for an exciting and unforgettable holiday.

Botswana is one of the last truly wild places to visit and for those who want to have that fully immersive experience, booking a Botswana safari holiday is one of the best things you will ever do. While you can plan your own trip and have the most wonderful holiday, having to navigate the roads and find your own way around the country is not something everyone will enjoy. Luckily with the option of both guided Botswana trips and self-drive holidays, there is something for every kind of holiday maker.

Botswana has a lot to see and to do, and when you are planning your trip, make sure that you are including a couple of fun elements as well as giving extra thought to where you want to stay during your time in the country. To help you make the most of your holiday, we’ve created a quick and easy guide packed full of helpful information.

Where To Go?

Botswana is, if nothing else, one of Africa’s greatest safari destinations. Botswana tours are characterised by the time spent looking for wildlife in all of the more popular wildlife reserves, and places like the Okavango are legendary in both the opportunities to see rare and wonderful animals and for the peace and serenity guests have a chance to feel. When planning your trip, here’s a couple of top attractions and activities that should be added to your list.

EXPLORE THE OKAVANGO DELTA

Lagoons & Islands

The Okavango Delta is a place of extraordinary beauty and one of Botswana’s unmissable safari destinations. Its winding waterways, seasonal floodplains and wildlife-rich islands create a remarkably diverse wilderness. Often described as the heart of Botswana, the Delta captures everything that makes the country so special: untouched landscapes, exceptional wildlife and a wonderful sense of remoteness. Visitors can explore by mokoro, boat or traditional game drive, with accommodation ranging from intimate tented camps to luxurious safari lodges. Whether travelling on a guided tour, private safari or fly-in journey, spending time in the Okavango Delta is an experience that should not be missed.

EXPLORE THE CHOBE RIVER

Large Herds & Boat Cruises

Chobe National Park is one of Botswana’s finest wildlife destinations, renowned for its large elephant herds and beautiful riverfront scenery. The Chobe River attracts an extraordinary variety of animals, particularly during the dry season when elephants, buffalo and antelope gather along its banks. Explore the park on a traditional game drive or take to the water for a relaxed boat safari, offering close-up sightings of hippos, crocodiles and abundant birdlife. With comfortable lodges around nearby Kasane and easy connections to the Okavango Delta and Victoria Falls, Chobe is a rewarding addition to any Botswana safari.
EXPLORE THE Nxai Pan National Park

Vast Salt Pans & Baobabs

Another spectacular place to go for a safari is the Nxai Pan National Park. Although the wildlife is a stunning sight to behold, it is the scenery here that really makes for a memorable time. The landscapes are ever changing and absolutely beautiful, with salt pans, sand dunes and epic baobab trees being just a few of the breath taking sights within the park.

When To Visit

It is safe to say that Botswana is blessed with wonderful weather all year round. Not only is the weather comfortable, but for those who want to go on a safari, Botswana offers year-round wildlife sightings, as the weather is never too cold to force animals into hiding.

BEST SEASON.

May - November

From May to November, Botswana enters its dry season, widely regarded as the best time for traditional safari experiences. Game drives are particularly rewarding during these months as wildlife congregates around permanent water sources, making animals easier to spot. The Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve, Savute, and Chobe National Park offer exceptional sightings of elephants, lions, leopards, wild dogs, buffalo, and a variety of antelope species. With sparse vegetation, clear skies, and little rainfall, visibility is excellent, creating ideal conditions for both wildlife viewing and photography.

Temperatures are pleasant from May to August, with daytime highs averaging 22°C to 29°C and chilly early mornings that can drop to 5°C to 10°C. As the season progresses into September, October, and November, temperatures rise significantly, often reaching 30°C to 38°C.

GOOD SEASON.

December - April

From December to April, Botswana experiences its summer and green season, bringing lush landscapes, dramatic skies, and excellent opportunities for wildlife photography across destinations such as the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve, Savute, and Chobe National Park. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, usually brief and spectacular, adding to the beauty of Botswana's wilderness.

Daytime temperatures typically range between 28°C and 35°C, with occasional peaks above 38°C, while mornings are generally warm at 18°C to 24°C.

Because you can easily visit Botswana at any time of the year and have an exceptional holiday, the only thing that is really going to determine when you choose to travel, your budget and, essentially, when you can get away for a bit. But if you want to learn more about travelling according to the months, here’s some information you might find helpful.

When planning your trip, you should think about planning around the holiday season. Winters are always going to attract more people, just because the weather is a lot more comfortable.

Once your route is planned, secure your accommodation, flights, transfers and activities. Botswana’s most popular camps can fill quickly, particularly during peak safari season, so booking early is always recommended. Botswana has a lot to see and to do, and when you are planning your trip, make sure that you are including a couple of fun elements as well as giving extra thought to where you want to stay during your time in the country. Botswana is one of the safer and easier places to travel in Africa, and although this destination certainly has its problems, for the most part, for travellers, it is idyllic. A Botswana tour naturally requires quite a bit of planning, and to start with, it helps to find a tour company to book a tour through and to guide you through the rest of the planning that will need to be done. Travel consultants have all of the knowledge that you will need in order to have a wonderful holiday.

When travelling to Botswana, you will need the usual kind of documentation such as a valid passport, an appropriate visa and you should make sure that you are able to bring along any medication that you might require for travelling.

Citizens of many European and Commonwealth countries do not require a visa for short tourist visits to Botswana. Requirements vary according to nationality, so travellers should always check the latest entry requirements before departure. Visitors requiring a visa can apply through Botswana’s official eVisa system or a Botswana embassy or consulate.

No specific vaccinations are generally required when travelling directly to Botswana, although a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required when arriving from an affected country. Routine vaccinations should be up to date, and malaria precautions may be recommended depending on where and when you travel, particularly in northern Botswana. Speak to your doctor or travel clinic before departure for personalised advice.

Botswana is easily reached by air or overland from neighbouring Southern African countries. Many international travellers connect through Johannesburg, with onward flights to Maun, Kasane or Gaborone. Maun is the primary gateway to the Okavango Delta, while Kasane provides convenient access to Chobe National Park and the wider Victoria Falls region.
Pack lightweight, neutral-coloured clothing, comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for daytime activities. Early morning and evening game drives can be surprisingly cool, particularly during winter, so bring warm layers. If travelling by light aircraft into safari areas such as the Okavango Delta, luggage allowances can be limited, with Botswana Tourism noting a guideline of 12 kg on light aircraft, so soft-sided luggage is recommended.
Botswana’s official currency is the Botswana Pula (BWP). Major credit and debit cards are widely accepted at hotels, lodges and larger establishments, while cash is useful for smaller purchases, tips and more remote areas. When travelling on safari, it is always advisable to carry some local currency alongside your cards.
