Most travellers come for the profound thrill of mountain gorilla trekking, but Rwanda’s beauty reaches far beyond the Virunga Massif. This is a country that feels clean, safe and refreshingly forward-thinking. Its capital, Kigali, is a vibrant cultural hub where contemporary art, world-class dining, great coffee and poignant history sit side by side.

Venture out and the scenery keeps shifting — from the shimmering shores of Lake Kivu to the wild savannahs of Akagera, where the Big Five roam once more. Rwanda has quietly become a byword for barefoot luxury, home to some of Africa’s most breathtaking lodges, where infinity pools spill towards volcano views and every detail is quietly perfected.

This is where our private, tailor-made tours truly shine. Seasons & Temperatures

When To Visit

Rwanda is a year-round destination due to its temperate tropical highland climate, but the timing of your visit often depends on your specific interests, particularly trekking.

Because Rwanda can be visited at almost any time of year and still deliver an exceptional holiday, the main things that will shape when you travel are your budget and, essentially, when you can get away. But if you’d like to plan around the seasons, here’s some information you might find helpful.

BEST SEASON.

Dry Season

The Dry Seasons (June to September and December to February) are widely considered the best times for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking. During these months, the forest trails are less muddy and easier to navigate, though you should always expect a light drizzle in the rainforest. June to September is also the peak season for wildlife viewing in Akagera National Park, as animals congregate around water sources.

During these drier months, temperatures are pleasantly mild, with daytime highs averaging around 25–27°C (77–81°F) and cooler evenings dropping to 10–15°C (50–59°F). At higher altitudes, such as Volcanoes and Nyungwe, mornings can feel especially crisp, so a warm layer is always worth packing.

GOOD SEASON.

Wet Season

The Wet Seasons (March to May and October to November) transform the country into a lush, vibrant green paradise. While trekking is more challenging due to slippery terrain, these months are a dream for photographers and birdwatchers. Additionally, some luxury lodges offer lower rates during this period, making it an excellent time for budget-conscious travellers to experience high-end Rwanda.

Temperatures during the wet seasons remain warm and comfortable, with daytime highs averaging around 26–28°C (79–82°F) and evenings cooling to 14–16°C (57–61°F). Rain usually falls in short, heavy afternoon showers, leaving plenty of time to explore, so a light waterproof and good boots are all you need.

Whether you prefer a tailor-made private journey or a guided tour through Rwanda’s lush landscapes, there are plenty of exciting options to explore. Rwanda is one of Africa’s most welcoming and rewarding destinations, but a memorable trip still requires thoughtful planning. A trusted tour company can arrange your itinerary, accommodation, transport and activities, helping you enjoy a seamless holiday from beginning to end. Before travelling, ensure you have a valid passport, the appropriate visa and any essential medication or documentation. With guided trips, private tours and unforgettable safari experiences available, Rwanda offers something for every traveller. To help you plan, we’ve created a quick guide filled with useful information for making the most of your Rwanda adventure.
Most visitors need a visa, but the process is refreshingly simple. Rwanda offers a visa on arrival for many nationalities, as well as a convenient e-visa you can apply for online before you travel. A single-entry tourist visa is typically valid for 30 days. Rwanda is also part of the East Africa Tourist Visa, which covers Uganda and Kenya too — ideal if you’re combining destinations. Always check the latest requirements for your nationality before booking.
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if you’re arriving from, or have recently travelled through, a yellow fever risk country. It’s also wise to be up to date on routine vaccinations such as hepatitis A and B, typhoid and tetanus. Malaria is present in most areas, so antimalarial medication is strongly recommended. We always suggest visiting a travel clinic or your doctor well before departure for advice tailored to you.
Rwanda is wonderfully easy to reach. Most international travellers fly into Kigali International Airport (KGL), the country’s modern, efficient gateway. RwandAir connects Kigali with numerous cities across Africa, Europe and the Middle East, and other major carriers offer convenient one-stop routes. From Kigali, most safari destinations are just a scenic road transfer or short domestic flight away.
Pack light, neutral-coloured clothing for trekking, along with warm layers for cool mountain mornings and evenings. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots, a good rain jacket, gardening-style gloves for gorilla trekking, insect repellent, sunscreen and a hat are all essentials. Don’t forget your camera, binoculars and any personal medication. A small daypack is handy for treks and day trips.
The local currency is the Rwandan Franc (RWF), and US Dollars are widely accepted for tourism services, permits and lodges. Major credit cards, especially Visa and Mastercard, are accepted at most hotels, restaurants and larger establishments in Kigali, and ATMs are readily available in towns. It’s always handy to carry some cash for tips, markets and smaller purchases.

Born to Wander: Why Adventure Travel Changes Everything

Adventure travel is an often-misunderstood term, and as a result, it gets overlooked by travellers who want to be on their feet but have no interest in anything hair-raising. At its core, adventure travel is the kind of travel that gets you moving. The Global Adventure Travel Trade Association defines it as tourism that includes at least two of three elements: physical activity, a natural environment, and cultural interaction. But that clinical description does not capture the feeling of standing metres from a gorilla family in an overgrown Ugandan forest, or watching the Victoria Falls from the flood.
