A diverse cultural experience
A country of misty forests, dramatic mountain ranges, meandering rivers, rolling savannahs, golden beaches and vast wilderness, South Africa has an extraordinary ability to feel like several destinations wrapped into one.
Here, you can wake to the sounds of the bush on safari, spend the afternoon sampling wines beneath the mountains of the Cape Winelands, wander through colourful neighbourhoods and contemporary galleries, or follow a rugged coastline where forests tumble towards the ocean. From cosmopolitan cities to tiny country towns and remote stretches of wilderness, every region reveals a different side of South Africa.
Its wildlife is equally remarkable. National parks and private game reserves protect some of Africa’s most iconic species, while the country’s coastline brings an entirely different world of marine life and spectacular scenery. Whether tracking wildlife through the Greater Kruger, exploring the wetlands of KwaZulu-Natal or travelling through the diverse landscapes of the Eastern and Western Cape, nature is never very far away.
South Africa’s story is also inseparable from its people. Historic architecture, museums, heritage sites and local communities offer fascinating insight into the cultures, events and individuals that have shaped the country. In cities such as Cape Town and Johannesburg, that history sits alongside thriving creative scenes, buzzing neighbourhoods, excellent restaurants and a new generation of artists, chefs and entrepreneurs. There is so much South African history to explore here, including old architecture, and museums full of the stories of people we will never get to meet but who have shaped our world and way of life.
And then there is the road itself. South Africa is made for exploring. Scenic mountain passes, coastal drives, wine routes and journeys through the countryside turn travelling between destinations into part of the experience.
Perhaps that is South Africa’s greatest appeal: no two days need to feel the same. Safari, food, wine, culture, history, beaches, mountains, cities and wilderness can all form part of a single journey.
South Africa isn’t simply somewhere you visit. It is somewhere you can explore again and again, discovering an entirely different experience each time.

Seasons & Temperatures
South Africa enjoys a generally pleasant climate throughout the year, making it a fantastic year-round destination. Winters can be chilly in some areas, particularly in the mornings and evenings, but days are often crisp, clear and sunny.
If weather is an important factor in planning your holiday, consider either travelling during the best season for your preferred experiences or planning around the specific regions you want to explore. South Africa’s diverse climate means there is almost always somewhere wonderful to visit.
Because you can easily visit Zimbabwe at any time of the year and have an exceptional holiday, the only thing that is really going to determine when you choose to travel, your budget and, essentially, when you can get away for a bit. But if you want to learn more about travelling according to the months, here’s some information you might find helpful.
When planning your trip, you should think about planning around the holiday season. Winters are always going to attract more people, just because the weather is a lot more comfortable.
Ultimately, the best time to visit South Africa depends on your itinerary. May to September is excellent for classic safari experiences, while the warmer summer months are particularly appealing for Cape Town, the Cape Winelands, beaches and coastal adventures.
Days can range from around 25°C to 32°C depending on the region, with afternoon thunderstorms bringing the landscapes to life. The bush becomes lush and green, migratory birds arrive, and many animals give birth to their young, making this a beautiful and rewarding time to travel.
Daytime temperatures generally average around 26°C to 31°C across much of the country, although lower-lying areas can be considerably warmer. November is typically one of the warmer months, while the arrival of the summer rains brings slightly cooler conditions as the season progresses.
For travellers primarily interested in safari, the months between May and September are particularly rewarding. These cooler, drier winter months bring thinner vegetation and wildlife tends to gather around rivers and waterholes, creating excellent conditions for game viewing.
Across many of South Africa’s inland and northern regions, winter days are generally mild, dry and sunny, although early mornings and evenings can be chilly. Temperatures vary considerably by region, but daytime temperatures commonly range from around 18°C to 25°C, with nights dropping to approximately 5°C to 12°C in many inland areas.
The Western Cape follows a different seasonal pattern, experiencing a Mediterranean-style climate with warm, dry summers and cooler, wetter winters. In Cape Town, winter temperatures from June to August typically reach daytime highs of around 17°C to 18°C, with average lows of approximately 8°C to 10°C. Summer, from December to February, brings warmer days of around 25°C to 28°C, making it an excellent time for Cape Town, the Winelands and the surrounding coastline.

Visa requirements for South Africa depend on your nationality and the length of your stay. Citizens of many countries can visit South Africa visa-free for tourism for up to 90 days, while other nationalities will need to obtain a visa before travelling.
Your passport should generally be valid for at least 30 days beyond your intended departure from South Africa and have at least two blank pages. Entry requirements can change, so we recommend checking with your nearest South African embassy, consulate or the Department of Home Affairs before travelling.
There are generally no compulsory vaccinations for travellers arriving directly from most countries. However, a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate may be required if you are travelling from or through a country where Yellow Fever is a risk.
Malaria is present in certain parts of South Africa, including some areas around the Kruger National Park and the north-eastern Lowveld. If your itinerary includes a malaria-risk area, speak to your doctor or travel clinic about appropriate precautions before travelling.
South Africa is one of the easiest destinations in Southern Africa to reach, with international flights connecting the country to major cities around the world. Most international travellers arrive through OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg or Cape Town International Airport.
An extensive domestic flight network also makes it easy to combine different regions within one holiday. Depending on your itinerary, South Africa is also exceptionally well suited to self-drive holidays, private transfers and guided touring.
What you pack will depend on the season and regions you are visiting, as South Africa’s climate can vary considerably across the country. Lightweight, comfortable clothing, good walking shoes, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses are useful throughout the year.
For safari, pack neutral-coloured clothing and warm layers for early morning and evening game drives. During winter, temperatures can become surprisingly cool, particularly overnight, while a light rain jacket is useful during the rainy season. If your journey combines safari, Cape Town, the Winelands and the coast, packing versatile layers is usually the best approach.
South Africa’s official currency is the South African Rand (ZAR). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants, shops and tourism establishments, with Visa and Mastercard among the most commonly accepted cards.
ATMs are widely available in cities and larger towns, although it is useful to carry a small amount of Rand for tips, markets, smaller establishments and more remote areas where card facilities may be limited.
