Why Choose Zambia?

Africa is made for adventure, and Zambia, with its stunning scenery and that irresistible sense of remoteness, has been winning travellers over for decades.

But Zambia isn’t all rough and rugged. It’s quietly becoming a rather developed nation too, at least in the cities. When you’re travelling to Zambia you’ll find all the modern comforts you need, and the lodges and hotels here are absolutely top class. That, plus the sheer amount there is to see, is why Zambia is fast becoming one of Africa’s must-visit destinations. Home to three mighty rivers, the Luangwa, the legendary Zambezi and the Kafue, Zambia has a geography all its own and a country that’s always moved to its own rhythm. The people are proud of their home, and you’ll feel that passion everywhere you go. From game guides to hotel staff, just about everyone you meet is warm, welcoming and genuinely happy you’ve come to share in the Zambian experience.

One of the best ways to see it all is on a Zambia holiday, the kind that’s pre-planned and guided. That way you get to soak up all the best the country has to offer without sweating the finer planning details. And since this is a rugged corner of Africa, a pre-planned trip is often the smart move if you’d rather not take on those unknown roads solo. Whether you’re after a touch of luxury or a rustic wilderness adventure, there’s a Zambia holiday out there to match exactly what you’re looking for. And to help you plan, we’ve put together a quick, to-the-point guide to get you clued up on this country and its best places to see.

But there is far more to Victoria Falls than the waterfall itself. Take to the skies on a scenic helicopter flight, cruise the Zambezi at sunset, explore the surrounding wilderness or embrace one of the many adventure activities for which the destination has become famous.

With spectacular scenery, wildlife, adventure and the unmistakable energy of the Zambezi, Victoria Falls is an unforgettable highlight of any journey through Zimbabwe.

EXPLORE Lower Zambezi National Park

Zambezi River & Sunsets

Where the mighty Zambezi River meets untamed African wilderness, Lower Zambezi National Park is safari at its most spectacular. Canoe silently past pods of hippos, drift alongside elephants as they cross the river, and cast a line for tigerfish in these legendary waters. On land, lions, leopards and buffalo roam the floodplains beneath a dramatic escarpment backdrop. Remote, wild and blissfully uncrowded, this is the kind of raw, up-close wilderness that stays with you long after you leave.

EXPLORE South Luangwa National Park

Ancient Trees & Sunsets

Known as the birthplace of the walking safari, South Luangwa is one of Africa’s greatest wildlife destinations. Explore the bush on foot with expert guides, tracking leopards, lions and elephants the way the first explorers did. As the Luangwa River winds through the park, it draws in astonishing concentrations of game, from strutting hippos to grazing giraffe. By day or on a thrilling night drive, the wildlife encounters here are simply unmatched. Wild, intimate and unforgettable, this is safari at its finest.

Seasons & Temperatures

When To Visit

The time of year you choose to visit Zambia will shape the kind of holiday you have. This is a country of distinct seasons, and each one brings its own magic. From the lush, green landscapes and dramatic skies of the rains to the golden, game-packed days of the dry season, there’s always something stunning to enjoy. Whether you’re chasing incredible wildlife sightings, roaring waterfalls or quiet moments in the wilderness, every month has something spectacular to offer. It simply comes down to the kind of experience you’re after.

BEST SEASON.

June To October

Since Zambia is very much a safari destination, the best time to have a holiday is between June and October. This travel season begins in the middle of winter and carries on into spring, and for the most part it stays warm and dry. With the rains on hold until later in the year, much of the vegetation has died back, and that makes spotting wildlife a whole lot easier, as animals gather around the shrinking rivers and waterholes.

Temperatures shift as the season progresses. In the cooler winter months of June and July, expect pleasant daytime highs of around 25°C (77°F), dropping to a chilly 6–10°C (43–50°F) at night, so pack a warm layer for those early morning game drives. As spring arrives in September and October, the heat builds quickly, with daytime temperatures often soaring to 35°C (95°F) or more, making October the hottest month before the rains return.

GOOD SEASON.

November & December

From November to December the weather can be a little unpredictable, especially as the rains begin to return. It's always tricky to pin down exactly when the summer rains will fully arrive, but the great thing about travelling at this time of year is that holiday rates are often more affordable than during the peak winter season. Surprisingly, December is a touch cooler than the rest of summer, though it remains quite humid. If you're travelling now, keep in mind that some lodges and camps close due to heavy rain and flooding.

In terms of temperature, expect warm, sticky days with highs of around 30–35°C (86–95°F) in November as the heat peaks before the rains, easing slightly to about 27–30°C (81–86°F) in December once the showers set in. Nights stay balmy at around 17–20°C (63–68°F), so you can leave the heavy layers at home for this warmer, greener time of year.

January to March

From January to March the wet season is in full swing, and tourists are generally not advised to travel. This is because Zambia has a messy rainy season, with many roads becoming impassable. If this is realistically the only time you can travel, try to plan your trip for around the end of March, when the worst of the rain has passed. March is also a wonderful time for bird watching, as many migratory species arrive and put on quite a show.

Temperature-wise, expect hot, humid and very green conditions, with daytime highs sitting around 30°C (86°F) and rarely dipping below 26°C (79°F). Nights stay warm and muggy at roughly 18–21°C (64–70°F). Rain tends to fall in dramatic afternoon downpours rather than all day, so there are still plenty of bright, beautiful moments to enjoy this lush, low-season landscape.

Most visitors do need a visa to enter Zambia, but the good news is it’s usually a simple process. Many nationalities can apply online in advance through Zambia’s e-visa system, or obtain a visa on arrival at major airports and border posts. If you’re combining Zambia with Zimbabwe, the KAZA UniVisa is a great option, covering both countries and allowing day trips to Botswana via the Kazungula border. Always check the latest entry requirements for your nationality before you travel, as rules can change.
A yellow fever certificate is required if you’re arriving from, or have recently travelled through, a yellow fever risk country. Zambia is a malaria area, so anti-malarial medication is strongly recommended, along with insect repellent and covering up at dusk. It’s also wise to be up to date on routine vaccinations such as tetanus, hepatitis A and typhoid. We always recommend consulting your doctor or a travel clinic well before departure for advice tailored to your trip.
Most international travellers fly into Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka, the capital, or into Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport in Livingstone if heading straight for Victoria Falls. There are convenient connections via regional hubs such as Johannesburg, Nairobi and Addis Ababa. Once in the country, light aircraft transfers are a popular and time-saving way to reach remote safari camps and national parks.
Think light, comfortable and neutral-coloured clothing for safari, along with a warm layer for chilly early morning and evening game drives, especially in the cooler winter months. Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent and comfortable walking shoes. Binoculars and a good camera are a must for wildlife, and if you’re visiting Victoria Falls, a light rain jacket will keep you dry from the spray. Pack any personal medication, as supplies can be limited in remote areas.
The local currency is the Zambian Kwacha (ZMW). US Dollars are widely accepted for tourism services such as park fees, lodges and activities, so it’s handy to carry some cash in smaller denominations. Major credit cards, particularly Visa, are accepted at most hotels, lodges and larger establishments, though it’s wise to carry cash for tips, markets and remote areas where card facilities may be limited. ATMs are available in the main towns and cities.
