Frequently asked questions

The dry winter months (May to September) offer excellent game viewing as animals congregate around water sources and vegetation is sparse. Summer (October to April) brings lush landscapes, newborn animals, and incredible birdlife, though afternoon thunderstorms are common. Both seasons offer unique safari experiences.

The Black Mambas are an all-women anti-poaching unit operating in the Greater Kruger area. Founded in 2013, they patrol the reserve on foot and by vehicle, removing snares, monitoring wildlife, and engaging with local communities to promote conservation. They’ve become internationally recognized for their vital role in protecting endangered species.

Yes! An optional Black Mamba experience can be arranged (subject to availability and advance booking). This unique opportunity allows you to meet the team, learn about their daily operations, and gain insight into the challenges and successes of frontline conservation work in Africa.

No, the Balule Nature Reserve and Greater Kruger area are located in a malaria zone. We recommend consulting your doctor or travel clinic about prophylaxis at least 4–6 weeks before departure. Additional precautions include using insect repellent and wearing long sleeves during dawn and dusk.

Pondoro is situated in Big 5 territory, so you have excellent chances of seeing lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. The reserve is also home to cheetah, wild dog, giraffe, zebra, hippo, crocodile, and over 350 bird species. Every safari is unique, and sightings depend on animal movements and seasonal behaviour.

Days typically start early with a wake-up call before sunrise, followed by coffee/tea and a morning game drive. You’ll return for a late breakfast/brunch, with the midday free for relaxation, swimming, or optional activities. Afternoon tea precedes the evening game drive, which includes sundowners, returning for dinner.

Fly into Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport (HDS), which has daily connections from Johannesburg and Cape Town. Return road transfers between the airport and Pondoro are included in your package. The scenic drive takes approximately 45 minutes through the lowveld bushveld.

Yes, absolutely! The Balule Nature Reserve, being open to the Kruger National Park, offers incredibly diverse and stunning landscapes that are perfect for photography from Vast open spacesa to dramatic skies, picturesque riverines to unique flora.

Pondoro offers a combination of exclusive Big 5 game viewing, genuine conservation impact, and intimate 5-star luxury. The lodge is set on a 50 000-hectare private concession on the Olifants River, open to Kruger National Park, meaning fewer vehicles, off-road sightings (where permitted), and unhurried time with animals. With just a limited number of suites, service is highly personalised and the atmosphere tranquil and romantic.

Pondoro is also a proud partner of the all-woman Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit, and a percentage of your stay directly supports vital conservation and community projects. Add in gourmet dining, a treehouse hide, bush dinners under the stars, and experienced guides and trackers, and you get a deeper, more meaningful safari than at many larger, busier lodges.

We highly recommend booking your Pondoro Black Mamba Safari Experience at least 6 to 12 months in advance, especially if you plan to travel during peak season (June to September) or over holidays. Pondoro is an intimate lodge with limited suites, and its popularity, combined with the unique Black Mamba experience, means availability fills up quickly. Early booking ensures you secure your preferred dates and avoid disappointment.
