After a morning meet & greet with your private guide, you leave the highlands on the C24 and C19, descending the Spreetshoogte Pass onto the vast gravel plains of the Namib. Golden grassland, isolated koppies and the quirky desert outpost of Solitaire — famous for its apple pie — mark the way to the great dune sea.

Included · Sossusvlei Excursion: Day 3 is dedicated to Sossusvlei, with your Sossusvlei shuttle and MET park entrance fees included: an early start to the towering red dunes, iconic Dune 45, the eerie Dead Vlei pan and Sesriem Canyon, before returning to the lodge for sundowners and world-class stargazing.

Your Stay — Desert Hills Lodge, Sossusvlei · Luxury Chalet · Dinner, Bed & Breakfast A stylish lodge of luxury chalets set against the rugged Tsaris Mountains, a short drive from the Sossusvlei gate. Private terraces, a pool, fine desert cuisine and vast starlit skies make it a memorable two-night desert retreat.

Sossusvlei & Dead Vlei

What is the Dead Vlei? Dead Vlei — "dead marsh" — is a blinding-white clay pan cradled among some of the highest sand dunes on Earth, deep within the Namib-Naukluft Park. Centuries ago, the Tsauchab River flooded here, and camel-thorn trees flourished. When the climate dried and the advancing dunes cut off the water, the trees died.

Their blackened skeletons — an estimated 600 to 700 years old — still stand today, scorched by the sun and too dry to decompose. Silhouetted against burnt-orange dunes and a cobalt sky, they create one of the most surreal and photographed landscapes in the world.

What Makes It Special

  • Surreal contrast of white pan, black trees & red dunes
  • Ringed by giant dunes including "Big Daddy" (± 325–350 m)
  • Best photographed at sunrise, when the light is softest

Leaving the coast on the B2, you climb inland through Usakos as the granite domes and giant boulder-strewn hills of the Erongo Mountains rise from the plains. This ancient volcanic massif, dotted with San rock art and rare desert wildlife, is one of Namibia's most striking and least-visited landscapes.

Included · San Living Museum: This afternoon visit Omandumba Farm at the foot of the Erongo, home to the San Living Museum near Omaruru. Walk with members of the San community as they share their ancient hunter-gatherer traditions — fire-making, tracking, bush medicine and rock-art sites — in one of Namibia's most authentic cultural encounters.

Your Stay — Ai-Aiba – The Rock Painting Lodge, Erongo · Standard Room · Dinner, Bed & Breakfast Ai-Aiba nestles among the giant granite boulders of the Erongo, its rooms framing sweeping views of the plains and floodlit rock faces. Set on a private reserve rich in San rock art, it offers guided nature walks, superb stargazing and warm hospitality in a truly wild setting.

Your spacious suite opens to the plains, and full-board dining, a pool and easy Andersson Gate access make it a superb two-night safari base.

Etosha National Park

One of Africa's greatest sanctuaries Etosha protects some 22,000 km² of saline pan, savannah and mopane woodland around the vast Etosha salt pan — so large it can be seen from space. In the dry winter months, August among the very best, wildlife congregates at the park's waterholes for unforgettable, unhurried viewing.
What to Look For
114 mammal & 340 bird species
Four of the Big Five — elephant, lion, leopard & black rhino
Great herds of zebra, springbok, oryx & giraffe
Dust gives Etosha's elephants their ghostly-white look
Explored on guided game drives with your private guide from the Andersson Gate, only a short drive from Etosha Oberland Lodge.

Rock Art & Great Game Viewing

Two unforgettable chapters of your journey — the ancient San rock art of the Erongo and the great wildlife theatre of Etosha. Here is a taste of what awaits:
Ai-Aiba Rock Paintings — Ancient San galleries Guided walks from Ai-Aiba lead to granite overhangs painted 2,000–5,000 years ago by San hunter-gatherers — ochre antelope, giraffe and dancing figures in one of Namibia's richest rock-art areas.
Great Game-Viewing Drives — Waterhole spectacles Full days on the trail link floodlit waterholes and the shimmering salt pan, where game gathers in remarkable numbers — unhurried, expertly guided, camera always close at hand.
The Cast of Etosha — Big cats to flamingos Lion, leopard, cheetah and elephant; rare black rhino after dark; giraffe, zebra, kudu, oryx and springbok; the endemic black-faced impala; and, after the rains, flamingos on the pan.

Your Stay — Onguma – The Fort, Etosha East · Bush Suite · Dinner, Bed & Breakfast One of Namibia's most dramatic lodges, The Fort rises like a Moroccan-African citadel above the Onguma reserve, overlooking a waterhole and endless bush.
